Monroe wildlife control Tip of the Month:

Do snakes eat birds?
All species of snakes are carnivorous which simply means they have to feed on flesh to survive. These include all kinds of animals and also other snakes. Being agile reptiles with incredible hunting skills, these animals can take down any animal they want. But this depends on their size and species.

Despite being an animal that spends most of its time in the sky, birds are no exception to this, as they are also prey to snakes. You might be wondering how it is possible for an animal that crawls on the ground to kill an animal that flies in the sky. A fact about snakes is that they are smart hunters that take down their prey with just a strike. What this simply means is that snakes take their time to aim and take down their prey. Right here, we will be taking you through how snakes get this done and why birds are an easy meal for these great and smart hunters.

How do snakes hunt down birds?
Depending on the species and the habitat where it is located, snakes hunt down prey in two simple ways. A snake may either be a hunting snake or an ambush snake. For the group of snakes in the former, what they do is hunt for their prey. In order for this group of snakes to catch and kill a bird, they often climb trees, approach the target bird unnoticed, and take it down. While snakes in the latter blend in with their natural environment and wait for a bird to fly close enough for it to strike it down and consume it.

In addition to both, some species of snakes do replicate the form of a harmless animal in order for birds to move close enough into its strike range. For example, the cantil snake does this by making its bright yellow tail tip look like a worm.

When venomous snakes strike a bird, they use their venom to paralyze the bird, then swallow it whole using its teeth to grab and hold the bird while it moves through its gut. Unlike smaller snakes, constrictors take down birds in an entirely different way. What these snakes do is wrap their body on the snake, breaking every bone in the body of the prey and tightening up the coils to squeeze out the last breath of the prey. After doing that, it will then carefully swallow its prey.

Being an animal with an unhinged jaw, swallowing a bird is an easy task. Having shared this, if you have always doubted the ability of snakes to take down birds, you don't need to doubt that anymore. Snakes can kill and swallow any bird they can reach.

However, some birds are predators to snakes, most especially small snakes. One of these birds is the eagle. Depending on the species, these birds can kill and feed on snakes of different sizes.

What other animals do snakes feed on?
The list of animals that snakes feed on is endless because their appetite depends on their size, habitat, and species. The animals that are quite common for snakes to feed on are frogs, rodents, fish, and insects.

Although, bigger snakes like pythons are known to be able to swallow bigger prey like antelope, monkeys, and many more. Their incredibly fast digestive system makes it quite easy for snakes to cope with prey of such size.
